I think the author wants the readers to believe that everything is going to be alright. For example, when Amir and Hassan are flying the blue kite, they are excited and happy. Then, Hassan is cornered by Assef, and is raped. The author used reverse psychology.
To get the real essence of what is happening in the story the author demonstrates direct characterizing in various different situations, taking the majority of the things that our imaginations do in most books into his own hands.
The author is very good on not deterring fromt elling the story on Amir's point of view which keeps making me think this is a memoir and not a fictionous story.
