My reaction to this book, was that the author gave a detailed description of Afghanistan in the late 20th century. Amir being the exception, life there is simple in comparison to life in America.
I also agree with Nick's post about Amir wanting his father's attention. I did not expect so much graphic fighting and conflict as the book progressed.

In response to Hubie's post I had never really thought about it that way but life there is for the most part simple.
My first reaction to this book that it was going to be about how Amir is always trying to get his fathers attention on him and not Hassan.
